DESCRIPTION -

We were approached by Index AC Ltd to help with their development adjacent to the Grand Union Canal in Birmingham.

The developer had a 200-year-old culvert running underneath their site where they had planned to site new houses, and a canal wall in a serious state of disrepair directly adjacent to another set of proposed new houses.

To meet the Canal & River Trusts planning conditions, we mobilised quickly to undertake a condition survey of the adjacent canal wall and a CCTV inspection survey to determine the condition of the brick culvert and canal wall. We used GPS to locate the exact position of the culvert through the to allow us to expose the culvert arch.

Following completion of the two surveys and exposure of the culvert, we were able to provide assistance with the design for enabling works and suitable construction methods to minimise the impact of the development on the canals fragile infrastructure.
